Event Selection
Given the role of 'theory of mind' (ToM) in social and academic functioning and the recent rapid increase in our understanding of the neurological and environmental factors that contribute to ToM, it is important that educations and speech-language pathologists understand behaviors that indicate delays/deficits in ToM and have strategies for assessing and developing ToM in patients they serve. This presentation will describe the developmental stages of theory of mind from infancy through adolescence, review current research documenting neural bases for emotional understanding and theory of mind, explain environmental factors that influence ToM development, present protocols for assessing development of ToM from infancy through adolescence, and demonstrate strategies for promoting ToM including selection of children's literature to promote ToM.

The conference will take place on Dec. 14, 2012, beginning at 8 a.m. at the UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders, 1966 Inwood Road in Dallas, in Glorig Auditorium. Registration is limited to 160 attendees.
